The Djembe
Originated in the Mandinka people of the Mali empire and is assumed to date back to approx 12th Century.
The djembe is and has been used for centuries in West African ceremonies and has now travelled throughout Africa and indeed the world.
In a West African percussion ensemble the djembe can be likened to lead and rhythm guitars of a typical western band.
In a typical traditional West African musical arrangement 'polyrhythms' or cross rhythms will be played on djembes, known as accompaniment djembes. Along with the bass drums or dununs a foundation of rhythm is created.
A further djembe will be played, known as the lead djembe and will create solo melodies to 'compliment' the existing rhythm arrangement.
